At the Grand Hyatt hotel in Kochi, the Shikhar Dhawan-led side shelled out INR 18.5 crore for Curran, who had a base reserve price of INR 2 crore. Curran’s selling price surpassed the record set by Rajasthan Royals when the side had bid INR 16.25 crore for South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris ahead of the 2021 season.
Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore entered the bidding race to get the Player of the Match of the T20 World Cup final as his price quickly reached Rs 7 crore, at which point RR joined the bidding. RCB dropped out shortly after as RR and MI continued to engage in a fierce bidding war. Chennai Super Kings, PBKS and Lucknow Super Giants entered the fray too, but Punjab eventually sealed the deal.
Later, Cameron Green also crossed the mark with MI agreeing to a INR 17.5 crore deal with the Aussie. Ben Stokes, meanwhile, equalled Morris’ mark as CSK roped him in. He will be seen as a potential successor to skipper MS Dhoni, who could be playing his last season in front of the Chepauk crowd.
